Fitzpatrick skin types & color selection in tattooing and PMU

The Fitzpatrick scale describes the melanin content of the skin and is crucial for the visual effect of tattoo and PMU pigments. Training on different skin tones helps to assess color decisions realistically.

Type I – Very light

• Very high contrast

• Ideal for fine lines and light colors

• PMU: cool to neutral brown tones are well suited

Type II – Light

• Wide color spectrum possible

• Good color stability

• PMU: neutral brow and lip colors

Type III – Medium light

• Very balanced

• Reference type for many color treatments

• PMU: universal shades work reliably

Type IV – Olive

• Colors appear slightly muted

• Higher saturation recommended

• PMU: warmer brow shades often more stable

Type V – Dark brown

• Light colors with less contrast

• Prefer strong, saturated pigments

• PMU: deeper, warm shades necessary

Type VI – Very dark

• Very high melanin content

• Contrast and color choice are crucial

• PMU: choose dark, warm pigments for visibility
