Horseshoe Piercings: Versatility Thanks to Circular Barbells

Horseshoe piercings, also known in the industry as circular barbells, are among the classics of body jewelry due to their characteristic shape and functionality. The design resembles an open horseshoe, with screw-on balls or caps at both ends of the curved bar. This shape makes the circular barbell ring one of the most versatile types of jewelry, as it combines the advantages of a ring with the ease of use of a barbell.

The Special Features of the Circular Barbell (CBR)

A key feature of the CBR (Circular Barbell Ring) is its symmetry and the ability to customize both ends. Unlike the Captive Bead Ring, where a bead is held in place by tension, the CBR features threads. This makes inserting and changing the jewelry much easier, as you can simply screw the beads on and off.

The possibilities are virtually endless:

  • Septum piercing: The horseshoe is particularly popular here, as it can be easily folded into the nose when needed (depending on anatomy) to make it invisible.
  • Lip and helix piercings: Thanks to its rounded shape, the jewelry fits perfectly against the contours of the body.
  • Genital and nipple piercings: The open design often offers greater comfort here than closed rings.

Pros and cons of horseshoe piercings

Like any type of jewelry, the circular barbell has specific characteristics that you should consider when making your choice.

Advantages

  • Easy to change: Thanks to the screw system, no special tools (such as ring-opening pliers) are required.
  • Customizable look: The end balls can be swapped out for spikes, crystals, or other designs, instantly changing the look of your piercing.
  • Lower risk of injury: Since the ring is open, it can give way more easily than a completely closed ring in some cases if pulled hard or caught on something.
  • Hygiene: The piercing channel is easier to clean because the jewelry can be moved freely within the channel without having to pull a fixed closure ball through the tissue.

Disadvantages

  • Risk of losing the balls: As with all screw-on closures, the balls can loosen due to movement. It is therefore advisable to check regularly that they are secure.
  • Snagging: Compared to a smooth segment ring, the two ends offer more surface area for clothing or hair to catch on.

Materials and Size Selection

When purchasing a circular barbell, choosing the right material is crucial for the health of your piercing canal. We carry models made of G23 titanium, which is particularly biocompatible and nickel-free, as well as variants made of 316L surgical steel or flexible plastics such as Bioplast.

When selecting a barbell, pay attention to the appropriate bar thickness (usually 1.2 mm or 1.6 mm) and the inner diameter. The diameter determines how snugly or loosely the barbell fits against your body. A diameter that is too small can cause pressure points, while a ring that is too large exerts unnecessary mechanical irritation.

What You Need to Know: Internal Thread vs. External Thread

An important quality feature of horseshoe piercings is the type of thread. High-quality circular barbell rings often have an internal thread. This means that the bar is smooth at the end and the thread leads into the bar. When inserting the piercing, this protects the tissue of your piercing channel, as no sharp thread grooves need to be pushed through the skin.

Whether as subtle everyday jewelry or as an eye-catching statement piece—thanks to its versatility, the horseshoe remains one of the most essential staples for every piercing enthusiast.
