Hawaiian American tattoo master Sailor Jerry Collins is best known for his remarkable tattoo designs that combine the fluidity of Asian motifs with classic American tattoo imagery.
Until now, most of Sailor Jerry's work has been controlled by a handful of collectors, seen only in museum or art gallery exhibitions, or in small edition self-published books.
Here's a sizable chunk of Sailor Jerry's stencils, the latest tattoo collectible, spanning his tattooing career from the 1940's through the early 1970's.
The baseline work of hundreds of his essential and surprisingly beautiful designs - pin-ups, roses, bluebirds, hearts and banners, and Jerry's infamous military/political cartoons.
The stencils themselves were hand cut into celluloid, vinyl or acetate sheets by the master himself for use during his daily thriving tattoo trade in downtown Honolulu. They are permanent tattoos carved in plastic in the best sense of the word and will stand the test of time.
In their original state, most carry remnants of charcoal dust from their last use. All are signed by Jerry with one of his several distinctive signatures.
This is the only book of its kind - a workbook for artists and a design catalog for folk art historians. The value of the stencils is included, along with descriptions of the stencils and their uses, and a glossary of tattoo terminology.
