Banana Piercings: The Perfect Curve with Curved Barbells
The banana piercing, often simply called a banana or curved barbell, is the ergonomic solution to the challenges posed by many piercing sites. While straight bars can put pressure on the piercing channels in certain areas of the body, the curved bar follows the natural curve of the skin. This design makes it one of the most indispensable pieces of jewelry in the modern piercing world.
Applications and Names
Due to their shape, curved barbells are used in very specific areas:
- Navel piercing: This is the classic application. The curve allows the jewelry to sit deep within the navel without being pushed outward through the abdominal wall.
- Eyebrow piercing: A curved barbell conforms to the curve of the temporal bone here and reduces the risk of the jewelry popping out.
- Rook and snug piercings: In the ear cartilage, these small banana-shaped bars are ideal for fitting the tight curves of the ear.
- Genital piercings: Here, the banana shape ensures significantly greater comfort and less irritation of the sensitive tissue.
Pros and cons of curved piercing bars
Choosing a banana barbell offers functional benefits but also comes with specific care considerations.
Advantages
- Anatomical fit: Since the bar is already curved, the tissue doesn’t have to be “bent” to hold the jewelry in place. This reduces the so-called “migration effect” (the piercing shifting out of place).
- Aesthetic effect: The curve ensures that the balls or jewelry caps lie flat against the skin and do not stick out unattractively.
- Versatile tips: Just like with a straight bar, you can swap the balls on a banana bar for crystals, opals, or themed tips to personalize your look.
Disadvantages
- Risk of twisting: Due to its curved shape, the jewelry can twist more easily in the piercing channel than a straight bar. This requires a bit more attention when aligning the attachments.
- Cleaning the threads: With navel piercings, residue accumulates more quickly in the lower recess of the navel. Thorough cleaning of the lower thread is therefore particularly important for you.
Materials and technical selection
For your safety, we offer curved barbells in various designs. Titanium G23 is particularly suitable for first-time use and for those with allergies, as it is lightweight and completely biocompatible. Surgical steel 316L stands out for its durability and classic silver sheen. For pregnancy, there are extra-long, flexible banana bars made of PTFE or Bioflex that adapt elastically to the growing belly shape.
Here, too, the threading system is a key quality feature:
- External thread: The standard version, where the thread is located at the end of the rod.
- Internal thread: The ball has the pin, and the bar is hollow. This prevents irritation during insertion, as no sharp threads glide through the skin.
Measuring the Right Size for Your Banana Piercing
The length of a banana piercing is always measured as the straight-line distance (the direct distance) between the two threaded ends, not along the curve of the bar. The gauge is usually 1.2 mm (eyebrow, ear) or 1.6 mm (navel). Downsizing to a suitable size after the initial healing phase prevents the bar from protruding too far from the skin and getting caught on things.
